Five Squares Q-AD 2025
In “Five Squares Q-AD,” I’m interested in the interplay between bold color and the material’s inherent qualities. Red, orange, and yellow meet iron, rough surfaces, and rust. Sometimes the color takes center stage; other times, the rust dominates. The five paintings belong together, yet each develops its own character.
I work with layers, overlays, and traces that remain visible in the painting. There’s a lot to discover on these small surfaces: fine textures, open fields of color, and areas where the two merge. The stretcher frame provides a clear foundation for the works.
The iron contributes something that I can only partially control. The rust continues to change slightly, even after I’ve finished working on the painting. That’s exactly what I like: I set the parameters and let the material have its own freedom. The painting continues to live on.
